Hootsuite vs Buffer: Which Is Better for Small Business?
Hootsuite vs Buffer for small businesses, with October 2026 prices: Buffer runs free to $12 per channel, Hootsuite starts at $99 per user.

Buffer is the better choice for most small businesses: it has a free plan for 3 channels and paid plans from $5–$6 per channel a month. Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month (annual billing) and makes sense only if you need its social inbox, brand monitoring and competitor tracking across up to 10 accounts.
The verdict
Pick Buffer if you mainly need to plan and schedule posts, you run fewer than about 10 channels, or more than one person will post. It’s free for 3 channels and costs a few dollars per channel after that. Pick Hootsuite if one person manages up to 10 accounts and also needs to answer messages, watch brand mentions and track competitors from the same screen. For most small businesses, Buffer covers the job for far less money.

Pricing: per channel vs per user
This is the biggest difference. Buffer charges for each social channel you connect. Hootsuite charges for each person who logs in.
Here’s what that means in practice, using annual billing:
| Business | Buffer | Hootsuite |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person, 4 channels | Essentials: 4 x $5 = $20/mo | Standard: 1 x $99 = $99/mo |
| 3 people, 6 channels | Team: 6 x $10 = $60/mo | Standard: 3 x $99 = $297/mo |
Buffer’s per-channel price also drops once you pass 10 channels (to $4 per channel on monthly billing for channels 11 to 25). Hootsuite’s Standard plan stops at 10 accounts; for more, you move to Professional at $199 per user.
Buffer’s pricing page gives two figures for its annual discount (about two months free, or 20%), so confirm the yearly total at checkout. Hootsuite’s plans page shows annual prices only; it says monthly billing exists but doesn’t list the monthly rate.
Free plans and trials
Buffer’s free plan is a real, ongoing plan. You get up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, 100 saved ideas, an AI Assistant, a community inbox and 30 days of analytics. For a shop posting a few times a week to Facebook, Instagram and one more network, that may be all you need.
Hootsuite has no free plan. Its 14-day trial needs no credit card and doesn’t charge you when it ends. But trial accounts have daily posting limits (10 to 20 posts per organization, depending on plan) and no bulk scheduling, so you won’t see its full workload during the trial.
Features that matter to a small business
Scheduling. Both handle the basics: a calendar, queued posts and analytics. Buffer Essentials adds first-comment scheduling, a hashtag manager, channel groups and reports. Hootsuite Standard includes unlimited scheduled posts across its 10 accounts.
Messages. If customers message you on social and you need one place to answer, both have an inbox. Buffer includes a community inbox even on its free plan. Hootsuite Standard includes one inbox for message responses, with inbox automation on Professional.
Monitoring. Hootsuite Standard includes brand and competitor monitoring. Buffer’s plan comparison doesn’t list monitoring. If you need to know when people mention you without tagging you, that’s Hootsuite’s clearest advantage.
Teams and approvals. Buffer Team includes unlimited team members, access levels and content approval workflows. Hootsuite puts approvals on Advanced, its most expensive self-serve plan. For an owner who wants to check a staff member’s posts before they go live, Buffer is much cheaper.
Analytics. Buffer’s free plan keeps 30 days of insights history; Essentials and Team include unlimited advanced analytics, and Team adds branded reports. Hootsuite’s custom performance reports and 90-day trend forecasting arrive on Professional, at $199 per user. If you only need to see which posts did well last month, both are enough.
AI help. Both include AI writing help. Buffer’s AI Assistant is on every plan, including free. Hootsuite Standard includes AI post and image generation.
Ease of use
Neither vendor’s pricing page measures ease of use, and we haven’t run a formal test, so we won’t score it. What we can say: Buffer’s plans have fewer moving parts (one price per channel, three tiers), which makes the bill easier to predict. Hootsuite’s plans add more features at each tier, which means more settings to learn. Use the free plan or the 14-day trial to see which you’re comfortable with.
Our take
For most small businesses, Buffer is the right pick. It’s free to start, cheaper at every team size we priced, and it includes approvals at a lower tier. Choose Hootsuite if one person manages several accounts and monitoring mentions and competitors is part of the job. Questions people ask
Is Buffer cheaper than Hootsuite?
Yes, by a wide margin for small businesses. One person posting to 4 channels pays $20/month on Buffer Essentials (yearly billing) versus $99/month on Hootsuite Standard. The gap widens as you add people, because Hootsuite charges per user.
Does Hootsuite have a free plan?
Hootsuite’s plans page lists Standard, Professional, Advanced and Enterprise, with no free plan. It offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, and you aren’t charged automatically when the trial ends.
How many social accounts can I manage on Buffer’s free plan?
Up to 3 channels, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. As each post publishes, a slot opens again. The free plan also includes the AI Assistant, a community inbox and 30 days of analytics.
Which is better for a team, Hootsuite or Buffer?
Buffer’s Team plan includes unlimited team members and approval workflows for $10–$12 per channel a month. Hootsuite charges per user, and content approvals come only on its Advanced plan, at up to $399 per user a month.
Can I switch from Hootsuite to Buffer easily?
Yes. Connect your social accounts to Buffer, rebuild your posting schedule, and move any scheduled posts across before your Hootsuite renewal. Post history and reports stay in Hootsuite, so export any reports you need first.
