Accessibility tools & scans

This topic covers the tools small businesses use to find and fix accessibility problems on their websites: free automated scans, accessibility widgets such as accessiBe and UserWay, and the hands-on fixes that tools can’t make for you. It’s for owners who want to lower their risk and make their site usable without becoming accessibility experts.

Set expectations first. The Department of Justice warns that automated checkers and overlays can help but must be used carefully: a clean scan doesn’t guarantee a site is accessible. A widget on its own doesn’t guarantee WCAG conformance or ADA compliance. In 2025 the FTC ordered accessiBe to pay $1 million and to stop claiming, without evidence, that its automated tool could make any website WCAG compliant. Treat a scan as a to-do list, a widget as one layer, and manual review of things like alt text, form labels, headings and keyboard access as the part that closes the gaps.
