Short answer

The main GoDaddy alternatives for domain names are Namecheap, Porkbun, Cloudflare Registrar, Spaceship, Squarespace Domains and Hover. Most charge less than GoDaddy’s $22.99 .com renewal and include free privacy. GoDaddy still suits owners who want domain, hosting and email in one account. Compare renewal prices, since first-year promos don’t last.

Why people switch

GoDaddy is one of the best-known names in domains, and for good reason: you can buy a domain, hosting, email and a website builder in one account, on one bill. Our own storefront, Secure Server (powered by GoDaddy), sells GoDaddy products for exactly that reason.

People look for alternatives for a few specific reasons:

  • Renewal price. As of October 2026, a .com renews at $22.99 a year at GoDaddy. The first year can be $2.99 for new customers, which makes the jump at renewal feel bigger.
  • Keeping the domain separate from the host. Some owners prefer the domain at one company and the website at another, so changing hosts never touches the name.
  • A simpler account. If all you need is the domain, a registrar that only sells domains can mean fewer offers at checkout.

None of these are problems with GoDaddy’s service. They are about fit. If you value one account for everything, staying put is a reasonable choice.

The alternatives

All prices below are for a .com, as of October 2026. Several come from a third-party price tracker; check the current price on each registrar’s site before you buy. Note that Verisign raises the .com wholesale price from $10.26 to $10.97 on November 1, 2026, so most of these will move up a little.

Namecheap

Who it suits: Owners who want a well-known, low-cost registrar with free privacy and the option to add hosting and email later.

Starting price: $6.48 first year for new customers; $14.78 renewal today. From November 1, 2026, Namecheap’s regular prices become $15.98 to register and $19.98 to renew, plus the ICANN fee.

The catch: After the November price change, the renewal gap with GoDaddy narrows to about $3 a year. Privacy is free on most endings, but not available on some, including .us. We compare the two head to head in GoDaddy vs Namecheap.

Porkbun

Who it suits: Owners who want a low, steady price with no big jump from year one to year two.

Starting price: $11.08 a year to register or renew, with free privacy. Promo codes can cut the first year by about a dollar.

The catch: There is no deep first-year discount, and the current price sits close to the new wholesale cost, so expect it to rise after November 1. Check current price.

Cloudflare Registrar

Who it suits: Owners who already use Cloudflare for site speed and security, or who want the lowest long-term price.

Starting price: At cost. Cloudflare passes on the registry price plus the ICANN fee with no markup, which works out to about $10.46 a year for a .com today and about $11.17 after November 1, 2026. Privacy is included.

The catch: Every domain on Cloudflare Registrar must use Cloudflare’s nameservers. You can’t point the domain at another DNS provider while it stays there. If your host or web designer expects to manage your DNS, talk to them first.

Spaceship

Who it suits: Price-focused owners who are comfortable with a newer registrar.

Starting price: $9.08 regular first year (lower with promo codes); $10.18 renewal, with free privacy.

The catch: The $10.18 renewal is below the new .com wholesale cost of $10.97 plus the ICANN fee, so a price increase after November 1 is very likely. Check current price.

Squarespace Domains

Who it suits: Businesses whose website is already on Squarespace and who want the domain in the same account.

Starting price: $10.00 first year, with free privacy, according to a price tracker in October 2026.

The catch: We could not confirm the renewal price. Check current price before you commit. It makes the most sense if you build on Squarespace; see Wix vs Squarespace if you are still choosing a builder.

Hover

Who it suits: Owners who want one flat price with no first-year promo and no renewal jump.

Starting price: $18.99 a year for registration, renewal and transfer alike.

The catch: It is one of the pricier options on this list. Hover’s .com page says WHOIS privacy is supported but doesn’t state the price; check whether it is included.

How to switch without losing data

Moving a domain is a registrar transfer. Your website and email stay where they are, as long as the DNS records come with you. The short version:

  1. Check timing. Under ICANN rules, a registrar may refuse a transfer within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. Don’t change the owner name or email right before you move; that can trigger a 60-day lock.
  2. Copy your DNS records. In GoDaddy, write down or export every record: A, CNAME, MX, TXT. The MX and TXT records run your email. Add them at the new registrar before the transfer finishes.
  3. Check your email. If you pay GoDaddy for email, moving the domain does not cancel or move that mailbox. It keeps working only if the DNS records point to it. Decide whether email stays or moves; see business email on your own domain.
  4. Unlock and get the code. Turn off the domain lock in GoDaddy and request the authorization (EPP) code. If you use DNSSEC, turn it off first.
  5. Start the transfer at the new registrar, enter the code and pay. A .com transfer adds one year to your current expiry date.
  6. Approve it from the email your old registrar sends, or wait. GoDaddy says most transfers finish in 5 to 7 days.

Our take

If renewal price is your main concern, Cloudflare, Porkbun or Spaceship will cost the least over time, with Cloudflare’s DNS requirement as the trade-off. Namecheap is the middle ground. If you want one account for domain, hosting and email, staying with GoDaddy or ordering through Secure Server is a sensible choice. Either way, we can get it set up so your site and email keep working through the move.

Questions people ask

Is there anything wrong with GoDaddy?

No. It is one of the best-known registrars, and it keeps your domain, hosting and email in one place. The usual reason people look elsewhere is price: a .com renews at $22.99 a year at GoDaddy, as of October 2026, versus roughly $10 to $20 elsewhere.

What is the cheapest alternative to GoDaddy for a .com?

Registrars that sell close to cost, such as Cloudflare, Porkbun and Spaceship, renew a .com for about $10 to $11 a year as of October 2026. The .com wholesale price rises on November 1, 2026, so check current prices before you move.

Will moving my domain away from GoDaddy take my website down?

It shouldn’t, if you copy your DNS records to the new registrar before you switch. Your website and email live with your host and email provider, not the registrar. The risk is forgetting a record, usually the email (MX) records.

Do I lose the time left on my registration if I transfer?

No. For a .com, the new registrar adds one year to your current expiry date, and the transfer fee pays for that year. The time you already paid for carries over.
